It is the systematic alteration in the pronunciation of a certain phoneme, resulting from the persistence of immature forms of articulation. Errors of omission, substitution, inversion, or phoneme distortion may be observed.
The phonemes most affected in the Spanish language are: S, R, L, D.
A 4-year-old child is expected to pronounce most phonemes properly, and a 6-year-old child is expected to pronounce them all normally. When there is an alteration in the joint that makes communication difficult, it is advisable to refer the child to the speech therapist.
