Specific Language Disorder (SLD)

Specific Language Disorder is a serious and long-lasting disorder that affects language acquisition from the beginning, lasts through childhood and adolescence, and can leave significant consequences in adulthood.

It is qualified as “specific” because language difficulties cannot be explained in terms of a more general disorder such as an intellectual disability, a hearing or motor deficit, or a generalized developmental disorder.

Some warning signs:

  1. Comprehensive and expressive difficulties.
  2. Linguistic errors that do not match the usual errors in the language acquisition process.
  3. Some language skills are preserved while other simpler ones are impaired.
